Below are my weekly notes which I began taking on March 10th, 2012.\u00a0<strong>If you want to post some photos on this site, please visit and post them to\u00a0<a title=\"Old Naturalist\" href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/oldnaturalist\" target=\"_blank\">the Old Naturalist Facebook page<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0Don&#8217;t forget to add any comments of signs of spring you have seen.<\/p>\n<p>Illustration by Jeanette Dickinson\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Photos by Lawrence Wade.<\/p>\n<p>April 8. 2012<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Screen shot 2012-04-05 at 10.50.42 AM\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/oldnaturalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Screen-shot-2012-04-05-at-10.50.42-AM-150x150.png\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Many yellow-rumped warblers in the cottonwoods and willows.<\/li>\n<li>First cabbage butterfly.<\/li>\n<li>First dandelions blooming on the south side of buildings.<\/li>\n<li>Red bud is blooming.<\/li>\n<li>Dutchman&#8217;s britches (spring wildflower) is blooming<\/li>\n<li>Wild leeks are full grown in the forest<\/li>\n<li>White oaks are flowering and leafing out (about 3 weeks early).<\/li>\n<li>June berries are blooming.<\/li>\n<li>Wild plum are in full bloom.<\/li>\n<li>Rue anemone, a spring wildflower,\u00a0 is blooming.<\/li>\n<li>Male turkeys are gobbling and displaying.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Screen shot 2012-04-05 at 10.54.06 AM\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/oldnaturalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Screen-shot-2012-04-05-at-10.54.06-AM.png\" width=\"272\" height=\"280\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Wild ginger is blooming.<\/li>\n<li>goldfinches are turning yellow after being gray all winter.<\/li>\n<li>tree swallows<\/li>\n<li>Great blue heron<\/li>\n<li>water lilies emerging above the water<\/li>\n<li>First dragonflies<\/li>\n<li>Migrating vultures<\/li>\n<li>Migrating marsh hawk (harriers)<\/li>\n<li>turtles on a log<\/li>\n<li>bloodroot is blooming (spring wildflower)<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Saw my first ground hog of the season, even though they have probably been out for a month.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"groundhogday\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/oldnaturalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/groundhogday.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"189\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t forget to add anything new that you have seen or heard&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>March 25, 2012<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Chorus frogs heard in large numbers in pond<\/li>\n<li>Wood frogs &#8220;cackling&#8221; in the ponds\n<div>\n<dl id=\"attachment_510\">\n<dt><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Screen shot 2012-04-04 at 4.39.05 PM\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/oldnaturalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Screen-shot-2012-04-04-at-4.39.05-PM.png\" width=\"192\" height=\"173\" \/><\/dt>\n<dd>wood frog calling with inflated body sac<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>Jim Ikhaml reported seeing a green heron<\/li>\n<li>Hooded mergansers on Lone Lake<\/li>\n<li>first thunderstorm of the season<\/li>\n<li>1\/2 inch of rain this week<\/li>\n<li>First Spring wildflowers blooming: Hepatica and Virginia bluebells<\/li>\n<li>crocuses blooming in neighbors yard<\/li>\n<li>harvested first dandelion greens of the spring<\/li>\n<li>honeysuckle bushes are totally leafed out<\/li>\n<li>First lawn mower<\/li>\n<li>red-bellied woodpeckers displaying<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;green tinge&#8221; of flowering trees covers the landscape<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>March 17, 2012<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Male robins calling<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Screen shot 2012-04-05 at 6.04.16 PM\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/oldnaturalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Screen-shot-2012-04-05-at-6.04.16-PM.png\" width=\"194\" height=\"187\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Male red-wings in the marsh may be in peak numbers.<\/li>\n<li>Song sparrows are singing<\/li>\n<li>nuthatches are making their &#8220;peinting&#8221; call in the woods.<\/li>\n<li>Broad-wing hawks are calling continuously, as they fly around the woods.<\/li>\n<li>Many trees are already blooming including: box elder, silver maple, and cottonwood trees. The catkins flowers on the aspens are fully grown.<\/li>\n<li>The maple syrupping season is over in the Northland<\/li>\n<li>Red elderberries, are blooming about 3 weeks early.<\/li>\n<li>This evening I saw three spring butterflies: a mourning cloak was feeding on the sap of\u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Screen shot 2012-04-04 at 4.40.38 PM\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/oldnaturalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Screen-shot-2012-04-04-at-4.40.38-PM-300x175.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"175\" \/>a box elder. I also saw a milbert&#8217;s tortoise shell and an anglewing butterfly.<\/li>\n<li>Red elderberry is budding out (about 3 weeks early)<\/li>\n<li>Heard a few chorus frogs in the pond today.<\/li>\n<li>My dandelion patch is already starting to come up.<\/li>\n<li>Pussy willows are just opening up in the marshy areas.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>March 16th, 2012<\/p>\n<p>The record heat has continued all week. Yesterday, it was 80\u00b0 in the Twin Cities. The number of birds calling\u00a0 has increased 10x since last week. Leading the charge are the usual suspects: cardinals and chickadees.<\/p>\n<p>I not sure what is happening to the weather in this part of the world, but I am already worrying about might happen here in the\u00a0 summer, since we are seeing such warm weather in March.<\/p>\n<p>March 10, 2012<\/p>\n<p>What has happened to the silent world of winter that I have been walking in for so many weeks? Within hours, I have gone from hearing a few lonely chickadee calls to a throng of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/oldnaturalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Chickadee020.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Chickadee020\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/oldnaturalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Chickadee020.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a>sound on the land including: \u201ccheer-cheer\u201d \u00a0calls of cardinals fill the air; \u201cfeebee\u201d calls of chickadees are heard in multiple areas.\u00a0 With the warm south winds, the temperature rocketed from a high of 34\u00b0 on Friday (3\/9\/2012) to a record 66\u00b0 on Saturday. The shift of the winds and the increased daylight has turned our native world upside down.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Drumming and mating calls of downy woodpeckers<\/li>\n<li>Numerous \u201cCheer-up\u201d call of cardinals<\/li>\n<li>Numerous \u201cFeebee\u201d calls of chickadees<\/li>\n<li>Mating calls of house finches<\/li>\n<li>Multiple flocks of migrating Canada geese<a href=\"http:\/\/oldnaturalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/chipmunk.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"chipmunk\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/oldnaturalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/chipmunk.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"197\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Active chipmunks<\/li>\n<li>\u201cPump-handle\u201d calls of blue jays<\/li>\n<li>Mobbing of crows and mating calls<\/li>\n<li>Killdeer calling and flying over head<\/li>\n<li>Male redwings calling from cattails<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Geese setting up territories along Minnehaha Creek<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0A few male robins calling from the trees.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Add anything you have seen or heard to my list above.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder what is the effect of this cacophony of sound on the land? I can feel the darkness lifting from my own spirit and the energy increasing in my body as the amount of sunlight has increased.
