Old Naturalist: The Hopkins Field Biology Camp has been run by Scott Stillman for 18 years. He recently received a \u201cLife Changer\u201d award for his work with children and nature. During this year\u2019s camp, I was surrounded by natural beauty, but the most inspiring thing for me was interacting with the young adults campers. <\/em><\/p>\n

The Shadow<\/strong>
\nLike death falls the shadow<\/em>
\nThe blue, the green, the yellow<\/em>
\nEverywhere this shadow lurks<\/em>
\n Waiting<\/em>
\nUntil the golden rays bleed through.<\/em>
\nNot to end, but to aid.<\/em>
\nAnd when the shadow rises<\/em>
\nYou will learn its name<\/em>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Silence<\/em>
\nLike the fog coming to trap the trees.<\/em>
\nWe can learn many things from silence.<\/em>

I think I have been killed one thousand times.<\/em>
\nAlthough it is hard to count over the chimes.<\/em>
\nFor that\u2019s the noise I make as I do die<\/em>
\nI think it is God making a small noise<\/em>
\nFor each moment I lived in gentle poise<\/em>
\nThey count carefully and would never lie<\/em>
\nI know the answer is carved in the stone<\/em>
\nWith this knowledge, I will not be alone.<\/em>
\nSo there is no reason to sit and mope
\n<\/strong>It is okay that I will die again.<\/em>
\nFor that means I will be a thousand men.<\/em>

\nThe calmness of the fallen trees<\/em>
\nThe serenity of waving leaves<\/em>
\nThe sun sinks towards the rolling hills.<\/em>
\nTaking with it daytime\u2019s thrills<\/em>
\nThe night bears arms to the open sky<\/em>
\nWhere the moon is soon to rise.<\/em>
\nBringing with it night\u2019s unrest<\/em>
\nThe darkness pressing in your chest.
\nThen sleep will come<\/em>
\nAnd next the sun,<\/em>
\nWill rise outside your window.<\/em>

\nShooed half away with distracted fussing<\/em>
\nReturning as soon as defences yawn.<\/em>

\nFell from cloudless skies<\/em>
\nTo a darken underworld and buzzing flies<\/em>
\nIlluminated by its old friend, the sun.<\/em><\/p>\n

The broken branches envy the lofty trees<\/em>
\nAnd remembers standing tall<\/em>
\nHaving leaves gilded with light<\/em>
\nWhispering to the wind passing by.<\/em><\/p>\n

The old tree finds happiness on the ground<\/em>
\nIt grows to like the chatter of squirrels<\/em>
\nThe whistling of grass and buzzing of flies<\/em>
\nNo longer missing the sky.
